The Eighth constituency for French residents overseas (huitième circonscription des Français établis hors de France) is one of eleven constituencies each electing one representative of French citizens overseas to the French National Assembly.

Area

It covers all French citizens living in the following eight countries: Cyprus, Greece, the Holy See (Vatican), Israel, Italy, Malta, San Marino, and Turkey. As of New Year's Day 2011, it contained 144,505 registered French citizens - of which 78,748 in Israel, 46,554 in Italy, and just 17 in the Holy See.[1] [2] [3]

This constituency will elect its first ever representative at the 2012 French legislative election.

Eight candidates are known at present.

The Union for a Popular Movement has chosen Valérie Hoffenberg, a former president of the American Jewish Commitee in France, as its candidate.[4]

The Socialist Party has chosen Daphna Poznanski-Benhamou, a legal consultant and resident of Tel Aviv. Her deputy (suppléant) is Philippe Hébrard, a resident of Rome.[5]

Europe Écologie–The Greens has chosen Pierre Jestin, a resident of Milan, with Agnès Bayatti-Özdemir as his deputy (suppléante).[6] [7]

The New Centre (a centre-right party allied to the UPM) has chosen Philippe Soussi, a lawyer based in Nice.[8]

The National Front has chosen Michel Thooris as its candidate.[9]

Edward Amiach will stand as an independent candidate supported by the Union of French Jewish Employers and Professionals.[10]

Philippe Karsenty will be a dissident candidate on the right.[11]

Gil Taïeb, who defines himself as a "militant Zionist", will stand as an independent, focusing solely on the French community in Israel.[12]
